Everyday work time

Work Hours & Time Card Calculators

Work-time math changes depending on whether you are checking one shift, a weekly time card, or a pay-period total. Keep break deductions, overnight shifts, and overtime thresholds visible before copying the result into a timesheet.

Method, example, and limits

Work-hour totals that preserve the source rows

Repeatable method

  1. 1.Calculate elapsed time for each shift and handle any midnight crossing.
  2. 2.Deduct unpaid breaks at the shift level before summing a day, week, or pay period.
  3. 3.Keep regular, overtime, premium, and paid-leave classifications separate from raw hours.

Worked example

One employee works 09:00–17:30 for five days with a 30-minute unpaid break each day.

  1. Each shift is 8.5 elapsed hours.
  2. Subtracting 0.5 hour gives 8 paid hours.
  3. 8 × 5 = 40 paid hours for the week.

Result: 40 paid hours before any jurisdiction-specific overtime or premium rule

Limits to keep visible

  • The calculator cannot decide whether an activity or break is compensable work.
  • Daily overtime, weekly overtime, rounding, and shift premiums vary by place and policy.
  • The employer time record and payroll system remain the controlling source for final pay.

One shift

Use Work Hours when a single start/end pair needs break deduction and gross pay context.

One week

Use Time Card when daily rows need to roll up into weekly totals and overtime.

One pay period

Use Payroll Hours when the question spans more than one week or pay window.

Which tool should I use?

Match the calculator to the time span

Common mistakes and work-time checks

Work-time check

Is Work Hours different from Time Card?

Yes. Work Hours is best for one shift. Time Card is best when several days need a weekly total and overtime review.

Work-time check

Where should break deductions happen?

Subtract breaks at the shift level first, then move the paid hours into the weekly or pay-period total.

Work-time check

Does this replace payroll software?

No. These calculators provide planning checks. Confirm final pay rules against your employer policy or payroll system.
